Our Story

Growing from one student to thousands, without losing our compass.

W&OD Trail in Virginia

From Loudoun County Virginia…

Founder Vinay Bhawnani was enjoying a demanding career as a technical consultant when he began moonlighting as a math tutor to his nephews. They were so pleased with their outcomes that they began referring friends to Vinay.

Having earned perfect scores on the math sections of the PSAT and SAT, as well as the Math Level II Subject Test, he began teaching his own innovative approaches to breaking down problems with his students.

The overwhelming number of referrals eventually led Vinay to leave his day job and pursue tutoring full time in his hometown of Ashburn, Virginia in Loudoun County. He has hand-selected his SAT prep tutors and trained them in his teaching techniques. Now he has brought these same techniques to a larger audience with PrepSquared’s online Small Group SAT Test Prep course.

Vinay and his staff have logged over 50,000 hours of tutoring, and learned a great deal about online asynchronous learning…what works and more importantly…what doesn’t…during the COVID pandemic.

Due to our ongoing success outcomes, over 78% of our students continue to come via word-of-mouth.

Leadership

Meet Our Talented Team

Vinay Bhawnani
Founder
SAT/ACT Math Instructor

A lifelong mathematician with strong communications skills, Vinay Bhawnani has tutored since 2007 and has worked with more than 5,000 students in middle school, high school, college and beyond. His all-inclusive expertise ranges from Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry to Precalculus, Calculus, and SAT prep. Vinay presents math in an innovative and engaging fashion that most students simply are not exposed to in a traditional classroom setting. Rather than distributing handouts or lecturing from a textbook, he strives to make his lessons both interesting and applicable to the real world. Indeed, for many of his students, math becomes “fun” for the first time.

A 1999 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Vinay majored in bioengineering and minored in chemistry and mathematics. He also took classes at the prestigious Wharton School of Business. In high school, he achieved a perfect score on the math sections of the PSAT and SAT, as well as the Math Level II Subject Test.

His career has included technical consulting work in New York City and an eight-year position with AOL where he managed billing systems. Locally, he worked as the Technical Director for a startup company and until early 2015, was Director of Product Management and the Research and Development head for a local software development company.  Since then, Vinay has dedicated his time at Loudoun Test Prep and Prep Squared to helping students and families succeed.  In his “spare” time, he does MORE math and is a huge fan of exotic cars!

Julie holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California at Santa Barbara. She loves travel and has bungee-jumped in New Zealand and Oregon, crawled under Egypt’s pyramids, been lifted in an elephant’s trunk in Thailand, and ridden in the L’Etape du Tour in France.

Instructors

Catherine Roberts
Math Instructor

Catherine’s love of math started in middle school when she joined math club and found a group of peers who were passionate about mathematics. Throughout middle and high school, Catherine loved participating in math competitions—including MathCounts, where she won second place—and traveling to many other university contests. She picked up tutoring on the side, working with children ranging from 6 to 17 years old. Catherine is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she double majored in Math and Computer Science. During college, she had multiple mentor roles, including becoming a teaching assistant for the introductory computer science class and being a resident advisor for a freshman dorm. She is new to Loudoun County, but has years of experience teaching math to high school students. When she is not inspiring young minds, Catherine loves to hang out with her niece and nephew, find new coffee shops, and crochet new sweaters or fun animals.

Kate LeFort
SAT/ACT Reading and Writing Instructor

Kate has always had a passion for English.  In high school, she competed in extemporaneous essay writing competitions and began college level grammar and composition classes two years early.  In college, Kate pursued a degree in professional writing to further her passion.  During this time, she discovered her love for not only technical writing, but also poetry.  She has been published in a book of local compilations titled “The Fountain”.  Kate began tutoring elementary school students in 2012, eventually tutoring high school students and college students in later years.  She has hosted essay writing sessions for college students throughout her college career that continued through graduation.

Michelle Kim
SAT/ACT Math Instructor

Michelle started her teaching journey in her freshman year of college at William and Mary when she picked up tutoring as a side gig while studying psychology and data science full time. She continued tutoring math online for the next five years, in math subjects ranging form elementary math to precalculus, along with the SAT, ACT, and SSAT. Before joining LTP, Michelle worked as a director of education at Mathnasium and a program director at a nonprofit organization. She hopes to build her career in education and eventually become a curriculum designer for an edtech company. When she’s not solving math problems, Michelle like to read vintage comics, go thrifting, and make her own coffee table books.

Jon Savage
SAT/ACT Reading and Writing Instructor

Born in Oklahoma and raised in Texas, Jon is a writer and teacher who has worked in education and publishing since 2013. After earning his undergraduate degrees (BA-English & BA-History) from the University of North Texas, Jon was the recipient of a Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Arts Award, a fellowship worth $150,000 for graduate studies in the Arts. With this award, Jon moved to New York City and attended the MFA program for Fiction Writing at NYU. Throughout these experiences, he has worked as a writing tutor, research assistant, editor, copywriter, and middle/high school teacher.  When not teaching or writing, Jon enjoys time in the sun, Lydia Davis’s flash fiction, and cold coffees year round. He listens to Beethoven at the same volume he listens to Parliament-Funkadelic and maintains a healthy obsession with the NBA (go Mavs!).

Wade Taliancich
SAT/ACT Reading and Writing Instructor

Growing up immersed in the South’s rich culture and arts, Wade Taliancich became fascinated with the power of writing. After graduating from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in digital journalism and minor in English, he moved to Virginia to pursue that love further.

Since being with Loudoun Test Prep, he has discovered a passion for teaching the intricacies of the English language to the next generation. Wade knows that the smallest details can prove to be the most important, so every step of the learning process is treated with care.

Sydney Richter
SAT/ACT Reading and Writing Instructor

Sydney grew up in South Florida. After beginning her undergraduate career at Florida Atlantic University, she went on to complete her BA in English at Florida State University: via its Literature, Media, and Culture program. She graduated summa cum laude in May 2022 with high honors and with an honors thesis under her belt. Sydney is now working towards her English MA at Georgetown University. Over the years, she has had various mentorship roles: she has been a tutor since high school and throughout her undergraduate career she led creative writing workshops at a local prison. Now, in addition to being an SAT Tutor, she is a Graduate Tutor with Georgetown’s Writing Center. In school, she has a passion for academic and literary research, journalism, and carceral studies. Outside of school, she enjoys anime, video games, comic books, reality television, and novels in verse.

Whitney Edgerly
SAT/ACT Reading and Writing Instructor

Whitney has always been fascinated by the power of words. Growing up with an English teacher
and professor mother, she was encouraged to read books and analyze films that may have
been slightly above her years from a young age and eventually began writing her own material,
ranging from songs to poems to short stories to (hastily abandoned) novel first drafts. A graduate of Langley High School in Fairfax County, Whitney is familiar with the often stressful and confusing academic environment students can find themselves in in northern Virginia, and turned her attention to tutoring in order to help kids feel more at ease with the process of applying to colleges and to encourage both scholastic and personal development in high school students. She graduated from the University of Virginia with honors and an English degree, having been a part of the student-run newspaper the Cavalier Daily as well as contributing to other publications and clubs across Grounds. When she isn’t writing or tutoring, you can find her playing guitar and singing in her rock band, volunteering in her community, or drinking (most likely overpriced) coffee.

Andrew Wagner
SAT/ACT Reading and Writing Instructor

Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Andrew has had a passion for the humanities and the written word for as long as he can remember. He graduated from the American University in 2024 with a degree in Philosophy and Religious Studies, where his success was facilitated by his strong reading comprehension skills, knowledge of grammar, and essay writing abilities. His acute capacity for interpreting and analyzing texts in an essay format allowed him to earn American University’s Donald Kane Prize for the best essay in Religious Studies, and to be awarded a Killam Fellowship in St. John’s, Newfoundland from Fulbright Canada. Andrew’s success as a reading and writing instructor is informed by his work as a supplemental instructor throughout college, where he led students through group readings of the classics of western philosophy, taught the fundamentals of reading comprehension, and led essay writing workshops. In his free time, Andrew has yet to exhaust his love of reading great works of philosophy and theology. He is a long distance runner, and loves to play the electric guitar with his friends or whoever is unfortunate enough to listen.

Mary Masi
SAT/ACT Reading and Writing Instructor +
Dual Enrollment/English 9-12  & College Essay Writing

Mary teaches Dual Enrollment, English 12 Academic, and English 10 Honors classes at Stone Bridge High School in Ashburn. She holds a Virginia Postgraduate Professional teaching license with an endorsement in English, and she is an adjunct instructor of English at Northern Virginia Community College. She earned a perfect GPA of 4.0 throughout her entire graduate education while teaching Freshman Composition at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, graduating with a Master of Arts degree in English.

Before her teaching career, Mary worked in the editorial divisions of John Wiley & Sons and LearningExpress publishing companies in New York City as both an editor and writer. She has written and published four books, including The Culinary Arts Career Starter and How to Pass the U.S. Citizenship Exam.

Mary’s educational philosophy centers around the importance of discovering and nurturing each student’s path to learning success, so each student may then reach his or her full potential. She enjoys getting to know the students she teaches and helping them achieve and surpass their educational goals.
